Interview: Lisa Goldin
I caught up with Lisa Goldin to hear about why she started making music, what it was like to perform alongside Ed Sheeran and what fans can expect from her!
Why did you decide to start making music?
Well it was not ever really a decision! It’s just this infectious and addictive calling I have – to create and perform music. It may sound a bit ‘out there with the fairies’ but it’s been a natural process leading from school musicals, to originals-only Uni bands to finally working with some epic musicians.
Who are your musical influences?
This list grows daily! Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, Barbra Streisand all the way to Mumford & Sons, One Republic, The Script, Ne-Yo, Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Jess Glynn, Jessie J, Carrie Underwood, P!nk and Zedd.
How would you describe your sound?
Like a strawberry lollipop, sweet-pop and husky-fizzle!
What was like it like performing alongside Ed Sheeran in the early days?
The best part of knowing an artist when they’re young is seeing how they started. Seeing how humble and real they are. These are the characteristics I fell in love with him as an artist. He writes out his thoughts and heart. That’s what I aspire to and he’s true to the core.
How did you residency at Ibiza and opening for Barbara Tucker influence your performances?
Shook me upside down and got my b*tt in gear, literally! I’m grateful for having such a superstar to learn from. There’s one thing singing a song and another performing it. Ibiza is when I learned to stand tall and own my spotlight alongside Barbara. I promise you I quivered in my boots every night before THAT gig!!!
What was it like working with Sarah deCourcy on ‘My Fire?
We worked through our label and publisher, long-distance. Much of the liaison is managed through those channels. When I laid down the vocal on 4th November 2015, we did everything in three hours that day. I had about a month to work on the song before hitting the studio with Ziggy.
What would you like to achieve in the music industry?
To be recognised as a songwriter as well as a recording artist and for top-notch musicians to want to create incredible, magical music with me.
Last but not least, what is next for you?
Right now it’s all about today. Everyday something is happening. I’m currently in a Barnyard Killer Queen Show touring until the end of May in Durban. We have plans to do lotsa interviews and press down there – just done Cape Town – so my schedule is choco which is fabulous. And then I’m back to the city of Gold in June with more concentrated touring for my music.
