Lisa Goldin

Lisa Goldin has been in the industry for quite a while; she has performed alongside Ed Sheeran at the 15 Minute Club at Saint Catherine’s Dock in London, had a residency at Teatro Pereyra opening for the legendary house & soul singer Barbara Tucker in Ibiza, and performed alongside Jesse J & Scouting for Girls.
In 2015 she released her debut single “Really Doesn’t Matter” and has now teamed up with British hit songwriter Sarah deCourcy, best known for her work with Armin Van Buuren, to co-produce her latest single “My Fire”.
Tell me about Lisa growing up?
Lisa: “I was very blessed with the School that I went to, as it was very music focused. I was always doing Eisteddfods and plays, I was in the Southern Transvaal choir for a while, and I had this amazing teacher who loved music and used to write shows around us. She put me forward for a lot of things, which led me to study music further. Then I went to the UK to study and that opened many doors for me.”
You shared the same venue as Ed Sheeran at the 15 Minute Club – how did that start?
Lisa: “In 2008 I started doing song-writing showcases, and someone offered me a job to MC at a showcase. I would open up with all my original songs, and then I would feature 5 artists, who would play their own material; I would also speak about them and research them. One day Ed Sheeran walked in with his dad and he was mind blowing from the start.”
You also worked in Ibiza and have been quoted as saying that working with top acts has really helped you hone your craft. How have these experiences been beneficial to you?
Lisa: “When I first started performing, I was very shy. I learned how to come out of my shell from Barbara Tucker – she gets on stage and she owns it, she owns every single part of her performance. She gets the audience involved. It is like going to church every day. There was this full gospel feel about her and her Lisa Goldin 2shows. It was incredible watching her. She would reach out to people, look them in the eyes, touch their hands. I went around Ibiza with her. She took me to all her shows. Her voice is also unbelievable. She is always engaging and connecting and I think that is the most important thing, to connect and engage with your audience.”
Your latest single is ‘My Fire’. Why do you feel that now is the right time for you to release your music?
Lisa: “I have been back in South Africa for three years. I am very new in this industry here. A lot has happened within those three years. I signed with David Gresham records, we then started working on material. It takes a while to find the right voice, the right Record, to make sure the first song is the right song. Last year we spent a lot of time in studio, working on my next single. I have been performing, I wrote a book, I have written an Indie Album, there are so many other things that have happened over the last three years. “
Why is ‘My Fire’ special to you?
Lisa:
“You go through so many stages as a musician; the highs and lows. One day you can be flying on radio and then the next day you don’t have a gig. When you first start, you have to really build up your rejection barrier. You have to be able to take those knocks. ‘My Fire’ is all about me finding my voice, finding the right song, finding the right persona – it has married everything that I am. I find it so inspiring and empowering to say to people not to be afraid to be who you are. It is so important. We can really stand up as individuals.”
So who is Lisa then – describe yourself in one sentence?
Lisa: “I am a singer-songwriter, who really wants to make a difference in the world with music, by uniting people with really positive messages and by touching peoples’ hearts through music. Music is such a powerful medium that can bring unity and connect people, and I want to be a part of that. Without music I wouldn’t be Lisa.”
Going forward?
Lisa: “After ‘My Fire’, I will probably be releasing an EP, with lots of touring.”
