BY NELSON MENDES · APRIL 13, 2016
MA: Hey Lisa… it is such a pleasure to be chatting to you…. are you well? Hi Mixed Apples! Wonderful to be catching up with you, thanks for having me. Yes, life is great! You have an incredible story on your already exciting musical career. Would you mind giving us a short background on how you got started with music as a young girl?
Thank you!!! Well it all started at school; performing in plays, learning piano and singing in the Southern Transvaal Choir. I had brilliant teachers who encouraged us kids to learn everything about the arts. Stage became home from an early age. I headed out to the UK to study music, and that is when my songwriting career started to take shape.
MA: What were some of you biggest influences growing up?
Our home was filled with soul, Motown and RnB. I’m talking: Dionne Warwick. George Benson, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey, Whitney and the old Skool flavours of Mary J Blige to discovering Alicia Keys. The stereo was always on and we’d all be singing along!
MA: You have performed with some huge names in the international music scene, like Ed Sheeran just to name one. What have been some of you musical highlights thus far?
It has been awesome meeting such massive talents along the way. A favourite was opening for Scouting For Girls in London. It was a show right before they went to number 1 on the UK Charts and the place was heaving! I was incredibly nervous performing solo, just keys and voice. But their fans embraced me as their own, were so supportive of my music, roared with applause and squeals of delight. I was SO humbled by that. A night to remember for sure! Roy Stride really inspired me to keep writing and singing my song.
MA: We see that you also resided in Ibiza for a few months, with a residency at Teatro Pereyra. Can you explain those few months working on the island of Ibiza?
Ibiza has a beautiful energy! The Spanish love music and life so performing to that audience was epic six days a week for six months. To top it off I performed alongside Barbara Tucker, which was pretty mind-blowing. I learnt a lot in those months about being on top form daily and loved every second of it! Lotsa focus and hard work…
MA: How would you describe your ‘sound’ in 5 words?
Sassy-Sultry-Golden-Power-Pop :> hahaha did I just say that?!
MA: You have worked with British hit songwriter, Sarah de Courcy, on your new single, MY FIRE. How was this experience and what can we expect from this single?
Sarah de Courcy is an incredible songwriter. It’s been an honour to say the least. I love working with British flavours especially after living there. My sound is more British than South African a lot of the time. I really hope that by bringing an international sound as a local artist to radio perks up the ears of South African listeners. The main reason I came back to SA was to share what my sound has become from all my little adventures…SA Pop has tons of room for growth, so hope I can be part of that pie! Everything’s crossed :>
MA: Where can people get to hear this song? IS it out yet?
Yes and yes! It is on iTunes, Amazon and all digital outlets worldwide. Download My Fire TODAY!
MA: Anything else that you are currently working on that we would be interested in hearing about?
Songwriting is an eternal ongoing project! There are some more collaborations enroute and yes there’s a little something in the wings…stayed tuned for more!
