DPC: Hi Lisa, thanks for chatting to DPC!
Hi Dirty Pink City, thanks for having me!
DPC: Please describe your music as to someone who’s never heard it before, and also tell us a little about yourself?
GoldinFans describe it as ‘songs that stick in your head after seconds of listening to it’! I love writing pure pop, with messages that touch people’s hearts. After performing pop music abroad I really loved the infectious melodies, ultimately becoming addicted to singing and writing in this genre. Born in South Africa, studied in the UK and was a jet-setter-artist for a while! About three years ago decided to bring my career home.
DPC: You just released a new single, My Fire. What’s it all about? And who produced it and worked with you on it?
This song grabs you right from the start. “My Fire” empowers a person to say this is who I am now watch me fly! I just love it. Sarah de Courcy of A&G Songs, Ziggy Adolph of David Gresham Records and I worked so hard on this production. It is a wonder seeing it come to life.
“It’s really wonderful building this little empire and grateful for the amazing support.”
DPC: You also released your debut single, Really Doesn’t Matter, last year. How was it received?
“Really Doesn’t Matter” was my stepping stone into the SA music scene. I was nominated No2 Emerging Artist of the Year and had some wonderful interviews with Cliff Central, SAFM, East Coast Radio and Hot 91.9FM. Was fabulous being featured in Grazia and performing nationally including at Radio2000’s Mandela Day. It’s really wonderful building this little empire and grateful for the amazing support.
DPC: We heard that you performed alongside Ed Sheeran and Jesse J. How were these experiences?
EPIC! I met Jesse J at the Pigalle Club, London on 1st December 2008. Patrick Alan of Earth, Wind & Fire ran this high-profiled songwriting showcase. It was my debut year performing in the UK and I was a baby. Well when Jesse started to sing in the soundcheck she blew the roof off, she is an amazing talent and that show was four years before “Price Tag” went to number 1. During that year I also ran a songwriting showcase in St Katherine’s Dock, London featuring 5 artists per night. I’d open the show with my songwriting and then MC the rest of the night. Well one day a father and son walked in and the son was Ed Sheeran. He must’ve been in his teens and literally brought the house down! I loved the London music scene and the platform for new artists to showcase their songs. There’s so much I learnt from being in the London hub. It was a real buzz!
DPC: You were also based in Ibiza for some time. What was that all about?
Yes! I did a residency singing at Teatro Pereyra in the old town, Eivissa, for six months. The Harmsen family who own the venue took me under their wing as their own – such beautiful people! Barbara Tucker was the featured artist, who would bring in her friends from the USA to sing with and also take me to the shows she was performing in the clubs like Pasha, Blue Marlin, Space… So I loved that experience as I was singing her songs and learning those hooks on top of performing my own material. It was pretty intense because for three months we literally did 7 days a week straight and I had to be extra careful resting and nurturing my vocal chords! I caught up with Barbara in Dubai when we were both out there a couple of years ago – what an inspiration to watch her perform again!
DPC: You are currently based in Johannesburg. How do you find the music scene in this city?
It’s booming! And it keeps growing and growing which is incredibly exciting. I was always watching from afar even when I was away and I just love the potential we as South African artists have. The world has yet to discover what we have :>
